This article describes how to configure various networking options.

Overview:

Configuring connection behaviour

The client offers synchronization over local area network (LAN), internet and/or a custom server. It's possible to configure three types of networking modes in the client:

  • LAN and Internet
  • Server only
  • LAN only

The networking mode controls the (re-)connection behavior:

LAN and Internet

Connects to

  • devices which are members of own folders
  • found by a network broadcast
  • foreign servers to obtain new IP information of devices which are members of own folders

There is no restriction to IPs or IP ranges possible like in the LAN only networking mode.

Server only

Connects to the server only. This actually disables any peer-to-peer traffic and keeps the connection to the server only.

LAN only

Connects to IPs and IP ranges that are

  • on a the same subnet
  • found by a network broadcast
  • configured in the LAN IP List

Connections from IPs other than those above will be rejected in this networking mode. On larger intranets it's often required to configure the LAN IP list, because computers are not a part of the same subnet or broadcast domain. This networking mode is also recommended when all network connections are established either locally or via VPN. This brings additional security, since no public internet connection are made at all.

(info) LAN and Internet is the default setting and recommended for most usecases.

To configure the connection behavior:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Select a networking mode from the Connect to dropdown box.

Configuring bandwidth limits

It's possible to restrict the actual bandwidth, the client will be using for its transfers. Furthermore the client makes a distinction between LAN and internet bandwidth, to have more flexibility.

Setting an internet bandwidth limit

To set an internet bandwidth limit:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Select a suitable profile from the Internet speed dropdown box or choose Custom to enter custom values.
