This article describes how to configure various networking options.

Configuring a custom server

In some rare cases it might be necessary to specify a certain server to which the client should connect to.

To specify a server:

  1. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  2. Click on Advanced.
  3. Click on the edit button next to the Server field.
  4. Enter the URL of the server you wish to connect to.
  5. Click on OK.
Overview:

Configuring bandwidth limits

It's possible to restrict the actual bandwidth, the client will be using for its transfers. Furthermore the client makes a distinction between LAN and internet bandwidth, to have more flexibility.

Setting an internet bandwidth limit

To set an internet bandwidth limit:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Select a suitable profile from the Internet speed dropdown box or choose Custom to enter custom values.

Configuring the disconnected behaviour

If the client looses the connection to the server, it may not be possible to check for permissions other members have on certain folders. Since the client may have one or more connections to other clients, it's possible to decide if the synchronization should continue or stop.

To configure the behavior when the client is disconnected from the server:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Select the intended behaviour from the Disconnected behaviour dropdown box.

Configuring network interfaces and ports

It's possible make the client listen for connections on a specific network interface and ports, tough we recommend to use the defaults.

To listen on a specific network interface:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Select the network interface the client should listen on from the Network interface dropdown box.

To change the network port for incoming connections:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Uncheck the Detect a suitable port automatically checkbox.
  5. Specify the desired port in the Data port field.

Using relayed transfers

This feature makes it possible to use the client without configuring your router and firewall, but requires a connection to a server. Both devices need to have relayed connection activated to make it work. Most routers and firewalls allow outgoing connections and responses from the device which was contacted. A relayed connection is established from both sides to the server. The server connects both devices making it possible to transfer data even if no incoming connections are allowed on the default or configured data port.

(info) Relayed connections are enabled by default.

To disable relayed connections:

  1. Enable the Expert Mode.
  2. Click on Preferences in the main window.
  3. Click on Network.
  4. Uncheck the Enabled relayed transfers checkbox.

Using UDT transfers

(info) This feature is described in the section about using UDT connections.
